Photos of our “Turtle Aquaponics” site before and after. This system is designed to cycle water back and forth from the vegetable bed to turtle tank. When the waste water from the turtle tank enters the vegetable bed micro-organisms convert the waste (amonia) to nitrates. The plants then “consume” the nitrates and grow. Because the plants remove the nitrates the water is naturally filtered and cycled back into the turtle tank.
Prior to this setup we would have to maintain the turtle tank filter every month and water the plants multiple times a week. Thanks to this system we don’t have to do any of that again. Another great aspect is that all water gets recycled over and over.
If you’re interested in setting something up feel free to ask any questions or check out one of my favorite books called “Aquaponic Gardening” by Sylvia Bernstein.
