Wooden Sheep

Reclaimed Home & Garden

Another two weeks have gone by and some of the kale is ready to be harvested. After harvesting, A Salmonella test was done and came out negative! Everything is good to eat, thanks to our turtles, fish, and of course the natural bio-filter we were able to grow low maintenance food.

Two weeks of growth since the last progress picture. Six goldfish have been added to make it a hybrid aquaponic system (two turtles & six fish).  Their tank is located under the walkway.

Two months of fishless cycling and the bacterias in the biofilter have established. The greens are loving it!

Photos of our “Turtle Aquaponics” site before and after. This system is designed to cycle water back and forth from the vegetable bed to turtle tank. When the waste water from the turtle tank enters the vegetable bed micro-organisms convert the waste (amonia) to nitrates. The plants then “consume” the nitrates and grow. Because the plants remove the nitrates the water is naturally filtered and cycled back into the turtle tank.

Prior to this setup we would have to maintain the turtle tank filter every month and water the plants multiple times a week. Thanks to this system we don’t have to do any of that again. Another great aspect is that all water gets recycled over and over.

If you’re interested in setting something up feel free to ask any questions or check out one of my favorite books called “Aquaponic Gardening” by Sylvia Bernstein.

This wardrobe was inspired when I found an old baby crib support frame at a thrift store. It is made out of reclaimed siding, floorboards and metal roofing. The hinges are from an old door and the casters were purchased locally.

I designed and built Revival Food’s “Farm a la Carte” with Mike Royer. The ability to  bring local farm food to everyone in a trailer built out with all reclaimed materials puts a smile on our faces.
